Recently, I was walking the aisle of my local Barnes and Nobles sipping my warm cup of Starbucks when I spotted a section in the magazine aisle on guidebooks for iPads, iPhones, tablets, smartphones…for SENIORS!! I thought this was amazing. An individual like me would have simply pushed a few icons to connect to YouTube and typed in “How to…” whatever it is I want to learn to use, fix, cook, etc.
Not too long ago, I had an 84 year old patient who wanted to find a new “simple” electronic device such as his old Casio to input his contacts and appointments. I suggested trying the iPad. During my next visit, I saw that he had obtained one. His daughter gave him her used iPad. Next to it was a thick manual on how to use this device. I honestly do not recall ever really referring to a manual whenever I bought a new tablet or smartphone.
I appreciate that there are magazines and guidebooks especially tailored for the elderly. When I first started out as a physical therapist, many of my older adult patients were lost when it came to technology, but I am seeing more technology connected individuals in the recent years.
